Haitian Connections-Online Education in Haiti

There are a lot of challenges when it comes to Haitian education. But where there are challenges there are opportunities for us to create something great. We have the opportunity to alleviate some of Haiti's problems in the education system while at the same time creating a new system that will give all Haitians a modern education. We can address issues on policy, access/affordability, material, and teacher training.

Policy – With online education we can create policies that allow us to have an education system that follows world standard. We can standardize the system and make it modern, effective and efficient at developing minds that will help create a new Haiti.

Access – Haiti has the fewest number of schools in the region. There are even less schools after the earthquake. The schools that are available are not affordable to everyone. Parents have to choose between having a meal or sending their kids to school. With online education we can work to bring the cost of education down and with the right strategy schools can be accessible to a majority of Haitians.

Material – Students are being thought from outdated materials. Materials are not relevant to a student’s life in Haiti. Lack of training in problem solving creates a nation where everything is broken and no one to fix them. We have to rely on other nations to solve our problems. With online education you have an abundant amount of free materials that are current and relevant for a modern education.

Teacher training - Some teachers in Haiti did not finish middle school. With online education, teachers can be trained and share their experiences, best practices with other teachers from all over the world. This will improve teaching methods in order to provide the best quality education to students.

Online education is an effort that will require everyone’s participation. One person, or an organization will not be able to manage this effort by itself. It will take a network of organizations, and volunteers to make this work nationally. United we can, divided we fail. There are several areas you can make a difference in this effort: administration, hosting sites, and teacher volunteer.

Administration - We need a group of people who are willing to help create an ecosystem to support free online education in Haiti. That would include: IT, marketing, recruiters, grant/proposal writers, etc... We will need to procuring free equipment for online education, and manage a network of organizations and teachers who are willing to work together to make free online education a reality in Haiti.

Hosting Sites- organizations/people in Haiti who are willing to host ESL classes at their site/business as a service to their community. We can work with them to make sure they have the appropriate software and schedule with them the best time to provide the service to the community.

Volunteer Teacher - People who are interested in being a volunteer teacher for online education. We will train them on lesson plans, technology and everything else that they need to make this work. As long they have a computer with internet connection we can work together.

This is one of few opportunities where people are not being asked to travel, donate money or anything else. All we need is your time and dedication to serve a people who is hungry to better themselves, their lives and their family. We will need to work together in the spirit of collaboration, cooperation, and coordinate our efforts to have a bigger impact. Together we can be a better Haiti.
